Food insecurity is defined as “the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one’s basic needs.” (Oxford languages) in 2022, a survey was conducted amongst 9,700 students and it was found that 38.3% of them have experienced food insecurity in the past 30 days. It was also found that less than half of the students that had experienced food insecurity were also unable to access their basic supporting resources. Specifically 48.9% of that being public resources and 33.8% of school resources. When these college students are facing these challenges, it can cause disruptions in their studies. Proper nutrients are essential for cognitive function as well as your physical health. Without the proper meals, your body will start to have physical weaknesses such as fatigue and reduced energy. This will prevent students from engaging in their classes. If a student attempts to consistently have a nutritious meal, they would most likely have to put in more hours towards their job/s to earn enough to be able to afford it on a daily basis. To address this problem, there needs to be accessible food banks for the students. That’s why I have found one program called the Sustainable Renton that offers people free nutritious grocery items and sanitary supplies to help support the community, no questions asked. They’re run by volunteers and will supply you with a box of the previously listed items every monday from 5:30pm-7:30pm. This is located at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Renton, Washington. So far, they have given out over 1,000,000 lbs of food!
